Noryo-Yuka
is a terrace above the west bank of Kamogawa River from Nijo to Gojo,
and dining there is one of the summer attractions in Kyoto. Now they open
from May 1st to September 30th.
Noryo-Yuka first appeared in the Edo period, the merchants
placed wooden benches in shallows of the Kamogawa River around Gojo when
they treated their guests in summer. The flood control and bank protection
works were conducted in the 17th century, then tea stalls appeared and
started some businesses.
It is very hot and humid summer in Kyoto, however, the lights
of the yuka lanterns create a beautiful and romantic atmosphere, and a
cool breeze blows along the river in the evening. Noryo-Yuka remains in
the old days and makes progress still now. |
